Applicant Types U.S. nonprofit organizations with 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status, accredited institutions of higher education, state and local governmental agencies, and federally recognized Native American tribal governments. Priority Areas Projects must explore themes related to the 250th anniversary of the United States, such as the American Revolution, the founding era, and evolving democratic ideals. Emphasis on diversity, inclusion, and broad public engagement. Program Description This program supports public humanities projects that enhance public understanding of our nation’s founding and evolution. It encourages innovative formats, community engagement, and long-lasting public impact in conjunction with the 250th anniversary in 2026. Program Goals The goals of Public Impact Projects (PIP) are to help organizations:
• Identify interpretive connections between their collections and the nation’s founding principles;
• Increase their capacity to offer public programs that celebrate the 250th anniversary and/or trace the nation’s progress toward a more perfect union;
• Enrich relationships with existing audiences or attract new ones.
Projects should have regional or national reach, or demonstrate deep engagement with local communities through partnerships or involvement of community members.Institutional Suitability Applicants must address institutional capacity within the narrative section of their proposal, including demonstrating the ability to complete the project successfully through relevant staff qualifications, organizational infrastructure, and past experience with public humanities work. The narrative should also describe the alignment of institution’s mission and its ongoing programs to the 250th anniversary. Application Process/Submission Instructions Submit through Grants.gov.
